Adjira blog cover reading Google Ads invalid activity credit report, how invalid click refunds work

Most advertisers who search for a Google Ads invalid clicks refund are really asking three questions. Did Google already catch the bad clicks? Did I get money back for the ones it caught late? And what can I do about the ones I think it missed? The Google Ads invalid activity credit report answers the second question, the Invalid clicks column answers the first, and the Click Quality Form is the route for the third.

This guide explains each one, with links to Google's own help pages, and what evidence to gather before you ask Google to look again.

Does Google refund invalid clicks?

In most cases you are never charged in the first place. Google defines invalid clicks as "clicks on your ads that don't represent a genuine interest in your business", including accidental clicks, clicks from automated tools and bots, and manual clicks meant to raise your costs, and says "You won't be charged for invalid clicks or impressions" (Google Ads Help: Invalid clicks).

There are two ways this happens:

  • Filtered before billing. Google says it "automatically removes any invalid traffic found before the end of your billing cycle from your campaign metrics and billing" (Google Ads Help: Managing invalid traffic). These clicks never appear in your click counts or your bill.
  • Credited after billing. When invalid traffic is found after the billing cycle has closed, Google "automatically issues an invalid activity credit in the next billing cycle, when appropriate and possible" (same page).

So the refund you are looking for is usually a credit that has already been applied. The next step is finding it.

Where to see invalid clicks in Google Ads

Add the Invalid clicks and Invalid click rate columns to your campaigns table. On the Campaigns page, open the columns menu, search for "Invalid clicks" and apply it (Google Ads Help: Managing invalid traffic).

These columns show the clicks Google filtered before billing. They are not part of your click count and you were not charged for them. Use them to compare campaigns: a campaign with a much higher invalid click rate than the rest of the account is worth a closer look, because it tells you where invalid activity is concentrated even when Google is catching it.

How to open the Google Ads invalid activity credit report

Credits for invalid activity found after billing do not change your campaign metrics. To see them per campaign, use the report built for this.

  1. Open Campaigns, then Report editor.
  2. Under Template gallery, choose Invalid Activity Credit Report: Search & PMax.
  3. Set the date range to the months you care about.

Google says the report "is available for Search and Performance Max campaigns" (Google Ads Help: About the Invalid Activity Credit Report).

What the columns mean

The report adds columns that Google defines on the same help page:

ColumnWhat it shows
Credited clicksClicks you received an invalid activity credit for after the billing period ended
Credited amountThe amount credited back to you for invalid activity detected after the billing period ended
Adjusted costYour invoiced campaign cost minus the invalid activity credit
Adjusted clicksClicks minus any credited clicks
Adjusted avg. CPCWhat you paid divided by your adjusted clicks
Adjusted cost / conv.Average cost per conversion based on adjusted cost

Adjusted cost per conversion is the most useful figure for decisions. It is closer to what a conversion really cost you once Google's late credits are taken into account.

When to ask Google to investigate

If you believe you were charged for invalid clicks that Google did not filter or credit, you can request an investigation. Google says you can submit a request for activity within the last 60 days, using the Click Quality Form (Google Ads Help: Managing invalid traffic).

Set your expectations before you file. Google also says an investigation "won't be able to confirm if specific clicks were marked as valid or invalid" (same page). You will learn whether a credit is due, not a click by click verdict.

What evidence to gather

A request with clear evidence is easier to assess than a general complaint. Collect:

  • Dates and campaigns. The exact date range, campaigns and keywords affected.
  • What changed. A spike in clicks or cost with no matching rise in conversions or engagement.
  • Visit level detail. For the suspicious clicks, the gclid values from your landing page URLs, the time of each visit, the IP addresses and the network operators behind them.
  • Patterns. Repeated visits from the same device or IP address, clicks from hosting providers, browser time zones that do not match the IP location, and visits with no interaction.
  • What you already did. IP exclusions you added and placements you excluded.

Keep the list factual. Describe what you observed and let the evidence carry the case.

Estimated waste is not the same as a credit

Click fraud tools, including Adjira, often show an estimate of the money spent on suspicious clicks. That number is useful for deciding where to act. It is not a refund, and it is not the same as the credited amount in Google's report.

Adjira multiplies the paid visits it scores as suspicious by the cost per click your ad account reports, and labels the result as an estimate everywhere it appears. Only Google can issue a credit. Our resources page explains the difference between estimated and confirmed spend, and the wasted spend feature shows how the estimate is built.

What to do about invalid clicks Google misses

A credit fixes the bill after the fact. To reduce the problem going forward:

  1. Find the pattern. Use the Invalid clicks column and your own visit data to find the campaigns, keywords, hours and placements where suspicious clicks cluster.
  2. Exclude IP addresses with evidence. You can exclude up to 500 IP addresses per campaign, and account level IP exclusions are also supported (Google Ads Help: Exclude IP addresses).
  3. Review placements and partners. For Display and partner traffic, exclude placements that bring clicks without engagement.
  4. Check location settings. Make sure location targeting reaches people in your markets, not people elsewhere who search about them.

If the suspicious clicks come through VPNs, our guide on how to detect VPN clicks on Google Ads covers the network checks in detail.

Where Adjira fits

Google sees the click. Adjira adds the view from your website. It scores each paid visit with a fraud risk score and its evidence, groups correlated suspicious visits into clusters, and can propose IP exclusions for Google Ads. Each exclusion is applied only after you grant write access and a person confirms the change. The evidence you keep is the same evidence you would attach to a Click Quality Form request.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google refund invalid clicks?

Google says you are not charged for invalid clicks or impressions. Clicks it filters before billing are removed from metrics and billing, and invalid activity found after billing is credited in the next billing cycle when appropriate and possible.

What is the difference between the Invalid clicks column and the invalid activity credit report?

The Invalid clicks column shows clicks Google filtered before billing, which you were never charged for. The Invalid Activity Credit Report shows credits for invalid activity Google found after the billing period ended, for Search and Performance Max campaigns.

How far back can I ask Google to investigate invalid clicks?

Google says you can submit an invalid traffic investigation request for activity within the last 60 days, using the Click Quality Form.

Will Google tell me which clicks were invalid?

No. Google says an investigation will not be able to confirm whether specific clicks were marked as valid or invalid.

What evidence should I send with a Click Quality Form request?

Send the dates, campaigns and keywords affected, the change you saw in clicks, cost and conversions, and visit level detail for suspicious clicks: click identifiers, times, IP addresses, network operators and repeated visits from the same device.
