Advantage+ bot traffic is a phrase advertisers search when a Meta campaign suddenly gets cheaper clicks and worse results. Advantage+ placements let Meta's delivery system decide where your ads appear across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. That often works well. But when the system optimizes for a cheap event such as link clicks, it can drift toward placements where clicks are cheap for reasons that have nothing to do with interest, including accidental taps and, sometimes, automated traffic.
This guide explains why automated placement can surface low quality traffic, how to check placement results and landing page views yourself, and which controls Meta gives you.
How Advantage+ placements work
With Advantage+ placements, you do not pick where ads run. Meta's system spreads delivery across its placements, looking for the results your ad set is optimized for at the lowest cost. Meta's help page on choosing ad placements in Meta Ads Manager covers the options, including choosing placements manually instead.
The key phrase is "the results your ad set is optimized for". If you optimize for link clicks, the system finds cheap link clicks. Cheap link clicks are not the same as cheap customers.
Why Advantage+ bot traffic shows up
Several features of automated placement can bring low quality clicks:
- Audience Network. Audience Network shows your ads in apps and sites outside Meta's own apps. Inventory there varies a lot in quality, and you see less of where your ad appeared.
- Accidental taps. Some placements, especially in apps and games, sit close to buttons or appear full screen between actions. People tap them by mistake.
- Shallow optimization. Traffic objectives that optimize for link clicks reward the cheapest clicks available.
- Less visibility by default. With automated placement, results are reported for the ad set as a whole unless you break them down.
Not all of this is bot traffic. Industry standards separate general invalid traffic, which list based filtering catches, from sophisticated invalid traffic built to look human (MRC: Invalid Traffic Detection and Filtration Guidelines). Accidental taps are low quality but human. The checks below help you tell which you are dealing with.
How to check Advantage+ bot traffic in Ads Manager
1. Break results down by placement
In Ads Manager, use the Breakdown menu and choose placement. You will see results for each placement the system used, such as Facebook Feed, Instagram Stories, Reels and Audience Network. Look at spend, link clicks, click-through rate and cost per result per placement.
2. Add landing page views
Add the Landing page views column next to Link clicks. Meta introduced landing page views to count "the number of visitors that arrive to your website after a link click on an ad" (Meta: New ways to better understand interactions). It needs the Meta pixel or Conversions API on your site.
3. Compare the ratio between placements
For each placement, divide landing page views by link clicks. There is no universal benchmark for this ratio, because page speed, audience and device mix all change it. What matters is the comparison inside your own account: a placement whose ratio sits far below your other placements with the same ad and the same landing page is the one to investigate. Our guide on Facebook ads clicks vs landing page views explains how to set your own baseline.
4. Check the outcome you actually want
Compare cost per purchase, lead or sign up by placement, using the conversion events you track. A placement can look cheap on clicks and expensive on customers.
What to check on your website
Ads Manager stops at the click. Your website shows the visit. Keep the fbclid parameter and use UTM parameters that capture the placement, so you can separate visits by placement in your analytics. Then look at:
- Network. Visits from hosting providers rather than home, office or mobile networks.
- Browser signs. Browsers that report automation control, or details that do not fit the claimed device.
- Time zone. A browser time zone far from the IP location.
- Behavior. Landing and leaving without scrolling or tapping.
- Repeat devices. The same device returning through different IP addresses.
Our main guide to Meta ads bot traffic walks through these checks step by step.

Controls Meta gives you
If the breakdown shows a placement sending poor traffic, you have several options. Menus change, so check them in your own Ads Manager.
- Choose placements manually. In the ad set, switch from Advantage+ placements to manual placements and remove the placement that performs badly, often Audience Network. Test this as a new ad set against the automated one rather than changing a running ad set.
- Use block lists. Meta's brand safety tools let you block specific apps and sites in Audience Network and other placements where block lists are supported.
- Check ad account level placement controls. Some ad accounts can exclude certain placements across all campaigns from the ad account settings. If your account has this option, it is the most durable way to keep a placement out.
- Optimize for a deeper event. Moving from link clicks to landing page views, or better, to a conversion event, steers delivery toward people who arrive and act.
Where Adjira helps
Adjira connects to Meta Ads read-only and matches visits on your website to campaigns. Each paid session gets a fraud risk score with evidence, network checks for VPN, datacenter and proxy traffic, and links to other visits from the same device. A separate visitor quality score keeps accidental but human taps apart from likely automation, so you can tell a weak placement from an attack.
Adjira does not change placements or push exclusions to Meta, because Meta's API does not support the exclusion lists Adjira can write to Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising. It shows you the evidence; you make the change in Ads Manager. TikTok has the same question with its partner app network, covered in TikTok Pangle invalid traffic.
Frequently asked questions
Does Advantage+ placements cause bot traffic?
Advantage+ placements do not create bots, but automated delivery can move budget toward placements where clicks are cheap, such as some Audience Network inventory. If you optimize for link clicks, cheap clicks can include accidental taps and low quality traffic.
How do I see which placement my clicks came from?
In Ads Manager, open the Breakdown menu and choose placement. You will see spend, clicks and results for each placement, and you can add landing page views and conversion columns to compare quality.
Should I exclude Audience Network?
Test it. Run one ad set with Advantage+ placements and one with manual placements that leave out Audience Network, with the same audience, creative and optimization event. Keep Audience Network if it brings conversions at an acceptable cost.
What is a good landing page view to link click ratio?
There is no single benchmark, because page speed, audience and devices change it. Compare placements and campaigns inside your own account that use the same landing page, and investigate the ones that fall far below the rest.
Can Adjira block Audience Network traffic?
No. Adjira scores visits and estimates suspicious spend, but it does not change Meta placements or write exclusions to Meta. You act on the evidence in Ads Manager, for example by choosing placements manually or using block lists.
